A Look Back: Boosting Synergies for Mediterranean Water Solutions!

18/07/2025
What Happened?

On July 8, 2025, the Natural Heritage Mission participated in a successful webinar focused on Boosting Synergies for Innovative Solutions in Water Management, Depollution, and Restoration in the Mediterranean Basin! This event, co-organised by the Innovative Sustainable Economy (ISE) Mission and the BlueMissionMed (BMM), marked the first in a series of cross-fertilisation activities designed to foster powerful collaborations between the Horizon and Interreg Euro-MED programmes.

Why Was This Important?

This webinar effectively linked the EU Mission Restore Our Ocean & Waters, specifically through the BMM project, with stakeholders from the Interreg Euro-MED sphere, bringing together two parallel worlds with similar goals: addressing critical water management, restoration, and depollution challenges in the Mediterranean.

Who Participated?

The event saw participation from a broad audience, including:

  • Innovative Sustainable Economy Governance projects partners
  • BlueMissionMed Consortium Partners
  • EU Mission representatives
  • Staff from the Interreg Euro-MED Joint Secretariat
  • Partners from other Interreg Euro-MED Missions’ Governance projects
  • Institutional stakeholders of the Mediterranean Blue Economy Taskforce
  • Notably, various Interreg Euro-MED projects have focused on innovative solutions for water management, restoration, and decontamination.

How did we contribute?

The Natural Heritage Mission was invited to participate in the workshop to explore ways to further develop strategic synergies with BMM, specifically, and with Mission Ocean, more broadly. Annelies Broekman (CREAF, coordinator of the Natural Heritage Mission’s Amplification Room) evidenced the numerous thematic synergies that can be created between the Thematic Projects belonging to the Natural Heritage Community, which encompasses more than 250 organisations across the Mediterranean, and the BMM. By participating in the workshop, some of the new tools and solutions developed by our Thematic Projects, like WE GO COOP’s Community of Practice for Wetland Contracts and TREASURE’s Catalogue of innovative solutions for port areas, now have the opportunity to reach a broader audience beyond the Interreg Euro-MED community.

Key Takeaways:

  • Knowledge Exchange: BMM and ISE Mission Governance projects effectively shared their main activities and results, showcasing innovative solutions for water depollution and discussing opportunities for upscaling.
  • Community Engagement: Participants learned about community engagement opportunities through the Innovative Sustainable Economy Community (ISEC) Hub of the Mediterranean and explored policy lab activities.
  • Visibility & Collaboration: Projects had the valuable chance to sponsor themselves and were included in BlueMissionMed’s future Catalogue of Services & Experts, which will increase their visibility and help capitalise on their results.
