The Mediterranean region is known for its biodiversity and rich ecosystems. Protected Areas (PAs) and Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs) play a crucial role in safeguarding biodiversity and ecological processes. Spatial connectivity is essential; PAs and OECMs should not exist in isolation but should be well-connected through corridors, integrated into wider landscapes and seascapes, and even extend into the ocean, to create effective networks.

The Mission for Natural Heritage, in collaboration with the Nature Thematic Community Projects, will work towards addressing challenges for governance related to nature. The Working Group on Connectivity of Natural Ecosystems will particularly target policies at the European and Mediterranean levels, aligned with international frameworks such as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the new Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), in particular, Targets 1 and 3. The group will delve into various questions to gain a comprehensive understanding of the current status and effectiveness of conservation efforts:

Assess the extent of PAs and OECMs, their representativeness and their connectivity.
Identify areas of high importance for biodiversity and ecosystem services not currently protected.
Assess the effectiveness of existing protected areas.
Examine opportunities and constraints for expanding PAs and OECMs.

We want to initiate the discussion with you around connectivity!

What challenges are you facing when involved in policy drafting and the implementation of technical solutions? How can the Mission for Natural Heritage support you in these processes?

Do you have any good practice, lesson learned, solution or tool you can share with us that could help us in the process?

We read you in the comments 👀
